Borno NBA wants probe of Boko Haram sponsors

0
The Nigeria Bar A s s o c i a t i o n (NBA) in Maiduguri has asked the Federal Government to investigate the allegation of sponsorship of Boko Haram levelled against the former governor of Borno State, Sen Ali Modu Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika(retd).
A hired Australian Negotiator, Mr Steven Davies indicted the ex-governor and former COAS for alleged sponsorship of insurgents.
NBA Chairman, Abdulwasiu Alfa at a press conference yesterday in Maiduguri also said that the association would drag the two men before the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague if the Federal Government refuses to investigate them, adding that it has assembled more than 50 lawyers who have volunteered to go to ICC to prosecute the case.
“If the Nigerian government fails to thoroughly investigate the duo of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and Gen. Iheijirika, we shall mobilize our knowledge, skills and resources to initiate or commence criminal proceedings before the ICC for the heinous crimes committed against humanity by the sect and their sponsors.
“No Nigerian is above the law as justice must not only be seen to be done but must be manifestly seen to be done. Let me assure the good people of Borno State that the NBA, Maiduguri branch, will stand firmly and solidly behind them to ensure that those who made orphans and widows of us are sent to where they belong,” the NBA chairman said.
He said the association will initiate criminal proceedings before the ICC after 21 days should the Federal Government fail to act.
“The Federal Government should act now. If it fails, we shall, after 21 days from today, give effect to our undertaking to initiate criminal proceedings before the office of the chief prosecutor of ICC to investigate these allegations. We strongly believe only a court can declare a person innocent or guilty. This can only be done when such person is properly investigated and possibly arraigned before a court,” he stated.
While commending the Federal Government for the zeal with which it was fighting the Ebola virus, the NBA charged the government to deploy same might in the fight against insurgency.

Atiku joins presidency

2015: Atiku joins presidential race

2
■ Says Nigerians crave for change
Former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will on September 24 formally make a declaration for the presidential ticket of the main opposition party in the country, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party’s presidential convention is expected to hold in November.
According to a statement from his media aide, Garba Shehu and made available to newsmen in Abuja at the weekend, the event will hold in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Although the statement did not reveal the venue of the formal declaration, it disclosed that former Aviation Minister, Professor Babalola Borisade will anchor Atiku’s campaign.
Recall that the former Aviation Minister worked for the victory of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and thereafter, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 and 1993, respectively.
Borisade also worked as the strategist for President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 and 2003 elections, both of which were won resoundingly by the PDP.
Saturday Sun checks revealed that the former vice-president would be contending for the APC presidential ticket along with the former presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari and Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The APC chieftain was the presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress in 2007 and lost the election to the PDP candidate, the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
Atiku returned to the PDP in 2010 and contested for the party’s presidential ticket for the 2011 election which he lost to President Goodluck Jonathan.
He dumped the ruling party this year and joined the APC, claiming alienation from the activities of the strategic organs of the PDP as the reason for his defection.
Offering an insight into why he was seeking the 2015 presidency, Atiku noted in the statement that his mission was to reform institutions of government and reconciling a nation torn apart by mutual ethnic distrust.
“This is not about me, it is about our young people. It is about Nigerians. It is their future, not the past. It is about reforming government, securing the people and reconciling the nation”, he stated.
The Turaki Adamawa further submitted: “2015 is special and a potential turning point in Nigeria’s history – that we need to seize the moment to give every Nigerian a chance to help re-define Nigeria as a place for them and their children to prosper and feel safe.” He noted that a change was needed now, adding that he was ready to lead that change.

#EbolaOutbreak: FG Postpones Resumption Date In Nigerian Primary/Secondary Schools

By - FG-EBOLANigeria’s Federal government has reportedly approved the current holiday of primary and secondary schools in the country until further notice.
According to the New Telegraph, the government said it was part of its measures to curb the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Comrade Jude Imagwe, the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Youth and Student Matters disclosed the extended resumption in Abuja yesterday, but did not say for how long.
He said that President Goodluck Jonathan was wary of the danger of the disease to the nation’s future generation and as a result ordered that the schools remained on holiday till the country find a way out of the outbreak. Imagwe said:

“He advised that as a President, he did not desire that our secondary and primary schools should be opened at this time because we have high population of young brothers and sisters who want to see themselves grow from primary and graduate tomorrow.
We cannot have what it takes to have eye on each of these brothers and sisters: the future of this country in their classe
